John Henry Update!!

The Dedication

On Wednesday, October 8 in front of television cameras and approximately 300 visitors, the

Kentucky Horse Park unveiled the bronze statue of John Henry, commissioned

 by Bill Oster and the John Henry Memorial Fund, and sculpted by Shelley Hunter.

"I saw the clay model of the statue and I was struck that it had so

eloquently captured the dignified and stalwart essence of John Henry.

 Ms. Hunter has done an outstanding job."

Hunter Equine Arts is the official website for information on the Equine Art of Shelley Hunter.  A nationally awarded sculptor and painter who's art is notable for its portrayal of the equine form in action.  This website is maintained and updated through the support of her fans and friends in the art community.

 

About Shelley Hunter

Shelley Hunter grew up in Michigan and has had a passion for art and horses since childhood.

Hunter has a BA in Art from Michigan State University and spent time as a painter and ceramicist, but never found the artistic satisfaction she sought until she discovered sculpture. Then, as she describes it, "Bells and whistles went off and I knew that this was it. This was what I was meant to do."

She specializes in equine subjects and says that translating the beauty and power of the horse into clay and metal is a constant joy. She likes to describe her style as “the inevitability of the next movement. I like to push my pieces to the point where there is only one possible place it can go. The next movement becomes inevitable, beyond the point of balance.

Hunter is a Full Member of the American Academy of Equine Art and currently serves as its Executive Director. After working for years as Advertising Director for several retail firms, she says that the AAEA position and studio at the Kentucky Horse Park is the best job she’s ever had. “I’m surrounded by horses and art every day. Who could ask for more?”
